When I settle down to watch Life in Pieces, all I can think about is food. Having just gotten married days ago, the no carbs/no fats/no joy shackles have finally come off, and I plan on bingeing tonight in more ways than one. The fact that both episodes were directed by Jason Winer and feature a music montage in the fourth story is no coincidence. Accomplished actors Dianne Wiest and James Brolin star as the heads of a large, happy family, in which each member is approaching different milestones. On May 10, 2019, it was announced that CBS officially cancelled Life in Pieces after four seasons, along with Fam, Happy Together and Murphy Brown. A combination of factors, including declining ratings, CBS’s desire to have an ownership stake, and the network needing to clear space on four new sitcoms in the fall 2019 schedule, led to the show’s demise. Each episode is told as four short stories, one for each branch of the Short family. On May 12, 2018, it was renewed for a fourth season, which was premiered on April 18, 2019. On January 22, 2015, CBS placed a pilot order, under the title Life in Pieces.

The pilot was written by Justin Adler and directed by Jason Winer. The first season was picked up for a full 22-episode order on October 27, 2015. On May 11, 2016, CBS renewed Life In Pieces On Cbs the show for a second season, which premiered on October 27, 2016. Life in Pieces was renewed for a third season on March 23, 2017, which premiered on November 2, 2017.
Created by Justin Adler, Life In Pieces had assembled one of the strongest family comedy casts in recent memory, fronted by Dianne Wiest and James Brolin. It also includes Betsy Brandt, Zoe Lister-Jones, Colin Hanks, Angelique Cabral, Thomas Sadoski, Dan Bakkedahl, Niall Cunningham, Holly J. Barrett, Giselle Eisenberg and Hunter King. Ensemble comedy Life In Pieces will be ending its run on CBS with its current fourth season. “The show… is a family comedy but it’s basically four different short films each one with a beginning, middle and an end,” says star Colin Hanks. “The first three tend to focus on three adult siblings that are in three different stages of adulthood and then the forth short film is the family together and how they interact.” In any given episode of Modern Family there are three or four competing stories that somehow tie up into one big narrative by the end of the half-hour. InLife in Pieces’ pilot there is a bad date, a birthing scene, a couple sending their kid off to scout colleges and then a cumulative funeral scene in which viewers learn that everyone is related.
